The combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, including infections in the ears, lungs, sinuses, skin, and urinary tract. Amoxicillin is in a class of antibiotics called "penicillin-like drugs." It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Clavulanic acid belongs to a class of medications called beta-lactamase inhibitors. It works by preventing bacteria from destroying amoxicillin.

Antibiotics have no effect on colds, flu, or other viral infections. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed increases your risk of getting an infection later that resists antibiotic treatment.

The combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid comes as a tablet, a chewable tablet, a slow-release (long-acting) tablet, and a suspension (liquid) to take by mouth. The tablets, chewable tablets, and suspension are generally taken at the beginning of a meal every 8 hours (three times a day) or every 12 hours (twice a day). The slow-release tablets are usually taken with meals or snacks every 12 hours (twice a day).

To help you remember to take your medicine, take it at the same time each day. Follow the directions on the medicine label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist anything you don't understand. Use the medicine exactly as directed. Do not use more or less than the prescribed dose or more often than prescribed by your doctor.
