Use of Lasix  

Lasix is a loop diuretic that acts on certain parts of the kidneys. The drug is used to treat high blood pressure or congestive heart failure or other conditions that cause excessive fluid accumulation (edema) in the body. 

Lasix: Dosage

The dosage must be determined for each patient individually. Adults: a single starting dose is usually 40-80 mg (1-2 tablets), taken in the morning; if necessary, the starting dose can be increased or decreased.

In the long-term treatment of edema, the usual daily maintenance dosage is 40-80 mg. In the treatment of severe edemas, the maximum daily dose is 600 mg administered in 3 to 4 doses. In chronic renal insufficiency doses, up to 1.5 g/day are used.

For children and adolescents, doctor usually prescribes 1-3 mg/kg body weight/1 time per day. The maximum daily dose, regardless of the bodyweight of a child, is 40 mg. For long-term treatment, the lowest effective dose should be used. Because of the dosage form, the drug should not be used in infants and children who cannot swallow the tablet. In liver damage, the elimination of Lasix is reduced by up to 50%. Renal damage has little effect on the excretion rate of Lasix, but less than 20% of the remaining active renal function increases the excretion time. In elderly patients excretion of Lasix is delayed, which may require dose adjustment. The dose should be gradually increased until the desired therapeutic effect is obtained. The drug may be taken regardless of meals.

What happens when you stop taking Lasix?

If you stop taking Lasix suddenly or forget to take your morning dose, you increase the risk of serious problems such as high blood pressure and, in rare cases, even a stroke or heart attack. If your reason for taking the drug was to relieve swelling, your swelling may get worse. Do not make up for a missed pill by taking a double dose.
